NEED TO KNOW

Washington County Legislative Reception Oct. 16th

Thank you to all of our members who have attended the legislative receptions being held around the state this fall.  The series continued last week with well attended events in Rutland last Tuesday and Newport last Thursday.  Physicians and PAs at both events had the opportunity to talk with legislators about the recent Green Mountain Care Board hospital budget orders and the Act 167 Oliver Wyman report and how the recommendations could impact patient care in their communities.  VMS Board Member Alison Davis, MD (Rutland) and VMS member Peter Stuart, MD (Newport) gave brief welcoming remarks.  Please mark your calendars for the last reception of the fall at Barr Hill in Montpelier on October 16th for VMS members who live or work in Washington County. Responses Continue to Act 167 Hospital Transformation Report

Hospital administrators, clinical staff and patients around the state continue to react to the Act 167 Oliver Wyman report.  See a summary of reactions in the news from the Vermont Association of Hospitals and Health Systems here.  Responses are also being submitted to the Green Mountain Care Board – responses received and the form to submit public comment can be found here.  VMS is continuing to work with its Board and specialty medical societies on next steps.  Please reach out to Jessa Barnard at jbarnard@vtmd.org if you would like to be involved.

Vermont Moves Towards Implementation of Act 111, Prior Authorization Reform

Act 111, the law that makes significant reductions in prior authorization, including allowing exemptions to step therapy and eliminating prior authorization for primary care providers ordering imaging, tests and procedures, goes into effect on January 1, 2025.  VMS has been working with statewide partners to inform implementation efforts, including how primary care providers will be identified and tracked by the payers, how step therapy exemptions will be requested and determined by payers, and designing a survey to gather baseline data regarding prior authorization impact.  VMS has also been partnering with the American College of Radiology to provide support to PCPs in ordering imaging in the absence of PA.  Please see a summary of helpful ARC resources that can be useful at the practice level, including Appropriateness Criteria and Clinical Decision Support, here.  ARC leadership will also be presenting at the VMS Annual Meeting on November 2nd.  VMS and other statewide professional organizations are tasked in the law to survey members regarding prior authorization impacts before and after the law goes into effect, so please watch your emails for a survey link and thank you in advance for supporting these efforts.  Follow developments here and in future issues of the Rounds.  Reach out to Jessa Barnard at jbarnad@vtmd.org with questions.
