Community Meetings on Transforming Vermont’s Health Care System Start Tonight

Community meetings to receive and give input on recommendations for hospital and health system transformation begin tonight.  The meetings are being led by Dr. Bruce Hamory and his team at Oliver Wyman.  As reported previous Rounds, in response to national trends, deteriorating hospital financial health, increasing costs for Vermonters, and gaps in access to local services, the legislature in 2022 directed the Green Mountain Care Board (GMCB) to retain a consultant to develop recommendations for hospital and health care system transformation.  At the June 19th GMCB public meeting, GMCB staff presented why this work was undertaken and Dr. Hamory and team shared their preliminary findings and options for statewide transformation efforts for Vermont’s healthcare system.  At the July 8th GMCB meeting, Dr. Hamory presented his preliminary recommendations for hospital transformation.   The recommendations are summarized on slide 19 and fall in the categories of improving EHR functionality, expanding telehealth, and pursuing additional group purchasing, centralization of services and shared staffing.  Specific examples include allowing smaller hospitals to form a corporation to jointly employ "regional physician groups" of specialists, developing regional ambulatory surgical centers and centralizing radiology interpretation.   The community meetings will provide an opportunity to learn about how these recommendations could impact specific hospitals and to provide community feedback.

Submit a Resolution to VMS – Help Direct the Work of YOUR Society

VMS welcomes members to submit resolution ideas.  Resolutions set the policy positions of VMS and often drive VMS advocacy work at the state and federal levels.

Resolutions can be submitted on a year-round basis, any time by any VMS member or group of members, including student members. Resolutions are intended to express composite positions of the VMS and are to suggest a significant course of action to be taken by the Society. To see adopted VMS resolutions, click here.

Once a resolution idea is submitted by a member, the resolution will be reviewed by VMS staff, who may assist with further drafting or clarification.  Resolutions are then distributed for comment and non-binding survey to all membership. At a Board meeting after gathering member feedback, the VMS Board will review the resolution and feedback of membership.  All resolutions presented to the Board then require a majority vote of the Board for action, including adoption, amendment or referral.

To submit a resolution idea, please fill out the form, available here or contact jbarnard@vtmd.org for further assistance.
